The gallery presents contemporary professional Polish art at home and abroad. It organises meetings with authors, screenings of films about art, poetry evenings and, since 1977, chamber and occasional concerts in conjunction with the Karol Szymanowski Museum "Atma" and the K. Szymanowski Musical Society in Zakopane. The gallery also organises contemporary art fairs.
It is famous for its annual March Salons presenting outstanding personalities in Polish art in solo and group exhibitions. At the Zakopane Gallery, their works were presented by, among others: Maria Anto, Magdalena Abakanowicz, Tadeusz Brzozowski, Barbara Gawdzik-Brzozowska, Jerzy Duda Gracz, Władysław Hasior, Zdzisław Beksiński, Jerzy Nowosielski, Jan Szancenbach. Antoni Rząsa, Jerzy Jędrysiak, Jacek Gaj.
The Municipal Art Gallery occupies a room on the first floor of the former 'Bazar Polski'. This building was erected in 1911 by Count Władysław Zamoyski, on his land. The first art exhibition was held in July 1911. Since 1912, the organisation of exhibitions in the "Polish Bazaar" was taken over by the "Podhale Art" Society, presenting works by the most outstanding Polish artists, among others: Wojciech Brzegi, Xawery Dunikowski, Julian Fałat, Vlastimil Hofman, Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, August Zamoyski.
As of 1 January 2001, the Municipal Art Gallery with its seat in Zakopane, 41 Krupówki Street, was established, which was included in the Register of Cultural Institutions of the City of Zakopane and registered in Book RIK 2/2001 kept by the Local Government of the City of Zakopane.
On 31 July 2002, by Resolution No. XLIII/436/2002, the Zakopane Town Council named the gallery after Władysław hr. Zamoyski.
The Municipal Art Gallery has its own extensive collection of works of art (painting, sculpture, printmaking, drawing, textiles), which is the result of purchases made by the Gallery over many years from exhibitions presented. The collection includes, among others, works by: Henryk Burzec, Barbara Gawdzik Brzozowska, Marta Gąsienica Szostak, Władysław Hasior, Jerzy Jędrysiak, Urszula Kołaczkowska, Stanisław Kuskowski, Ryszard Otręba, Andrzej Pietsch, Stanisław Rodziński and Arkadiusz Waloch.
